Runes in Mythology, Ritual, Literature: The Aarhus Old Norse Mythology Conference 23rd-24th November 2023

Conference this week!

We are very excited to see you all in Aarhus this week for what looks to be a fantastic conference! Registration is closed.

Due to some cancellations, we have made a couple of slight changes to the programme. The most significant change is that we have moved the reception and performance of Völuspá Thursday night from 20.00 to 18.30. Please bear this in mind in order not to miss out on the performance!

You can find the latest version of the programme at any time through the link on this site.

The address of the conference venue is Fredrik Nielsens Vej 4, 8000 Aarhus C. There is a very limited number of parking space available, so we recommend finding alternative modes of transportation to the conference. The conference center is 40 min. walk from the train station, but public transportation would also provide a good alternative. Letbanen (the Aarhus lightrail trains) stop at “Aarhus Universitet (Ringgaden)” and from there it is a 5 min walk. Alternativly, many busses stop at the university stop too (bus 16 and 18, for instance) while bus 5A stops at “Studenternes Hus/Nordre Ringgade” which is very close to the conference centre as well.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via e-mail.

Registration Open and Conference Programme Ready

It is our pleasure to finally announce a most exciting programme for the Runes in Mythology, Ritual, Literature-conference in Aarhus on November 23rd and 24th 2023.

These two days promise to be packed full of interesting and innovative discussions of runes and the diverse roles they have played in society and culture for more than 2000 years! We have also opened the registration for the conference for all who are interested in participating. A link to both the conference programme and the registration can be found using the dark-red buttons in either the bottom of the page (if you're viewing this on your mobile) or on the right-hand side (it your are using a computer browser). We are grateful for financial support from the Carlsberg Foundation, Kungliga Gustav Adolfs Akademien för svensk folkkultur, and Aarhus University.

Any questions can be directed to the conference organisers Simon Nygaard (sn[at]cas.au.dk) og Pernille Hermann (norph[at]cc.au.dk). We hope to see you in November!

Registration and programme due in primo-September

Summer is coming to an end and the organising committee has been hard at work putting together the best programme possible for this year's Old Norse Mythology Conference in Aarhus in November. The final details are almost in place and we will open for registration as well as present our programme in the beginning of September. Until then, enjoy the Glavendrup runestone from Northern Fyn, Denmark, upon which several of the paper will touch.

Call for Papers and Key Note Lecturers announced

We are pleased to share with you the Call for Papers for this conference and we invite junior and senior scholars to submit an abstract on the themes described in the Call for Papers here. Please submit your abstract of no more than 300 words to Simon Nygaard (sn@cas.au.dk) or Pernille Hermann (norph@cc.au.dk) no later than 15th of May 2023. Feel free also to contact the organizers should you have any questions.

Key note lectures at the conference will be given by Edith Marold (Kiel), Judith Jesch (Nottingham), Kristel Zilmer (Oslo), and Marco Bianchi (Uppsala). We look very much forward to hearing these esteemed colleagues' perspectives on runes in mythology, ritual, and literature.
